How to Use Reddit Sentiment Analysis
What is Reddit Sentiment Analysis?
Reddit Sentiment Analysis tracks what the Pokemon card community is saying about specific cards on Reddit. Our system monitors Pokemon card subreddits, identifies mentions of cards, and uses AI to determine whether the sentiment is positive (bullish), negative (bearish), or neutral.
Why Does This Matter?
Community sentiment can be a leading indicator of market trends:
- Early Hype Detection: Cards being discussed positively often see price increases
- Bearish Signals: Negative sentiment may indicate declining interest or value concerns
- Social Proof: High mention counts show genuine community interest
- Trend Spotting: Rising sentiment trends can help you identify cards gaining momentum
Real-World Example
Imagine a vintage Charizard starts getting mentioned more frequently on Reddit with positive sentiment like "This card is undervalued" or "Just picked one up before prices spike." The Sentiment Analysis tool would:
1. Detect these mentions across multiple subreddits
2. Calculate an aggregate sentiment score (e.g., +65 - strongly bullish)
3. Show you the trend (e.g., up 12 points from last week)
4. Let you read the actual Reddit discussions driving the sentiment
This gives you actionable intelligence to make informed buying or selling decisions.
Getting Started
Accessing the Tool
1. Navigate to Premium Tools in the main menu
2. Click on the Sentiment tab
3. You'll see a table of cards ranked by Reddit sentiment
What You'll See

- Green score (>20): Bullish sentiment - community is positive about this card
- Red score (<-20): Bearish sentiment - community is negative about this card
- Gray score (-20 to 20): Neutral sentiment - mixed or balanced opinions
Example Scores:
- +87 - Very bullish (shown in green)
- -42 - Bearish (shown in red)
- +5 - Neutral (shown in gray)

Reading Sentiment Scores
Score Scale
Sentiment scores range from -100 (most bearish) to +100 (most bullish):
Score Range | Sentiment | Color | Interpretation |
+80 to +100 | Very Bullish | Dark Green | Extremely positive community sentiment |
+50 to +79 | Bullish | Green | Strong positive sentiment |
+20 to +49 | Moderately Bullish | Green | Positive sentiment, but not overwhelming |
-19 to +19 | Neutral | Gray | Mixed or balanced opinions |
-20 to -49 | Moderately Bearish | Red | Negative sentiment emerging |
-50 to -79 | Bearish | Red | Strong negative sentiment |
-80 to -100 | Very Bearish | Dark Red | Extremely negative community sentiment |
How Scores Are Calculated
1. AI Analysis: Each Reddit mention is analyzed using natural language processing
2. Sentiment Classification: Mentions are classified as positive, negative, or neutral
3. Score Assignment: Positive mentions add points, negative mentions subtract points
4. Aggregation: All mentions in the time period are averaged to create the final score
5. Normalization: Scores are normalized to the -100 to +100 scale
Example Sentiment Analysis
Card: Charizard (Base Set)
Period: Past 14 days
Reddit Mentions:
- "Just picked up a PSA 10 Charizard, this card will never go down in value" → Positive (+75)
- "Charizard prices are getting ridiculous, way overpriced" → Negative (-60)
- "Thinking about grading my Charizard" → Neutral (0)
- "Pulled a Charizard from a booster box!" → Positive (+50)
Calculation:
- 2 positive mentions: (+75 + +50) / 2 = +62.5
- 1 negative mention: -60
- 1 neutral mention: 0
- Average score: (+62.5 - 60 + 0) / 4 = +0.6 (rounded to +1)
In this case, the sentiment would be +1 (Neutral) because positive and negative sentiments nearly cancel out.
What "No Data" Means
If you see "No data" for a card:
- The card has zero Reddit mentions in the selected time period
- Reddit users aren't currently discussing this card
- This doesn't mean the card is bad - it may just be less popular for discussion
Understanding Mentions and Trends
Mention Count
The mention count shows total Reddit discussions in the selected period:
- High mention count (50+): Card is actively discussed, data is statistically significant
- Medium mention count (10-49): Moderate discussion, sentiment is somewhat reliable
- Low mention count (1-9): Limited discussion, sentiment may be skewed by individual opinions
Example:
156 mentions
92 / 28
This means 156 total mentions with 92 positive, 28 negative, and 36 neutral.
Positive/Negative Breakdown
Understanding the ratio helps you gauge consensus:
- 92 / 5: Strong consensus - most people agree (bullish)
- 15 / 45: Strong consensus - most people agree (bearish)
- 28 / 26: Divided opinion - community is split
Trend Indicators
Trends show whether sentiment is improving or declining:
Trending Up (↗ +12.5)
- Sentiment score has increased by 12.5 points compared to the previous period
- More positive mentions are emerging
- Community opinion is improving
- Strategy: Consider this a momentum signal for potential price increases
Trending Down (↘ -8.3)
- Sentiment score has decreased by 8.3 points
- More negative mentions are emerging
- Community opinion is declining
- Strategy: May indicate waning interest or concerns about the card
Stable (− 0.0)
- Sentiment hasn't changed significantly
- Community opinion remains consistent
- Strategy: Look to other factors (price, sales volume) for signals
Time Periods
Sentiment is tracked across multiple time periods:
- 7 days: Captures very recent hype or negativity (most volatile)
- 14 days: Default view, balances recency with statistical significance
- 30 days: Longer-term sentiment trends (more stable)
- 90 days: Shows sustained community interest over time (most stable)
When to Use Each:
- 7d: Spot breaking news, new releases, or sudden hype
- 14d: General monitoring and decision-making (default)
- 30d: Confirm trends aren't just short-term noise
- 90d: Identify cards with sustained long-term interest
Using Filters Effectively
Date Range Filter
Choose your time period based on your goals:
7 Days (1 Week)
- Use for: Breaking news, new set releases, tournament results
- Pro: Catches immediate reactions
- Con: Can be volatile and noisy
30 Days (1 Month)
- Use for: Medium-term trends, confirming sustained interest
- Pro: Filters out short-term noise
- Con: May miss very recent developments
90 Days (3 Months)
- Use for: Long-term sentiment analysis, identifying sustained trends
- Pro: Most statistically significant, least volatile
- Con: May include outdated sentiment from months ago
Recommendation: Start with 14 days (default), then check 7 days for recent momentum and 90 days for long-term validation.
Sentiment Direction Filter
Filter by community sentiment:
All (Default)
- Shows all cards regardless of sentiment
- Use when exploring or researching broadly
Bullish Only
- Shows cards with positive sentiment (score >20)
- Use when looking for cards with buying momentum
- Great for finding undervalued cards gaining attention
Bearish Only
- Shows cards with negative sentiment (score <-20)
- Use when looking for cards losing favor
- Helps you avoid overpriced cards or identify selling opportunities
Minimum Mentions Filter
Set a threshold to filter out cards with low mention counts:
Examples:
- Min 5 mentions: Filters casual one-off discussions
- Min 10 mentions: Only cards with moderate discussion
- Min 25 mentions: Only highly-discussed cards (most reliable data)
Why This Matters:
A card with only 2 mentions might have a +90 score, but this could be based on just 2 very positive comments. That's not statistically meaningful. Setting a minimum mention threshold ensures you're looking at cards with genuine community interest.
Recommendation: Use 10+ mentions for serious research, 25+ for high-confidence signals.
Sort Options
Seven sorting options help you find different types of opportunities:
1. Most Mentions (Default)
- Sorts by total mention count (highest first)
- Use for: Finding the most-discussed cards
- Example: Charizard with 342 mentions appears first
2. Highest Sentiment
- Sorts by sentiment score (most bullish first)
- Use for: Finding cards with the strongest positive sentiment
- Example: A lesser-known card with +85 sentiment appears before a -20 card
3. Lowest Sentiment
- Sorts by sentiment score (most bearish first)
- Use for: Finding cards losing favor or potentially overpriced
- Example: Cards with -75 sentiment appear first
4. Trending Up
- Sorts by trend increase (biggest positive change first)
- Use for: Finding cards gaining momentum
- Example: Card that went from +10 to +45 (+35 change) appears first
5. Trending Down
- Sorts by trend decrease (biggest negative change first)
- Use for: Finding cards losing momentum or cooling off
- Example: Card that went from +60 to +15 (-45 change) appears first
6. Highest Price
- Sorts by current market price (most expensive first)
- Use for: Finding high-value cards with sentiment data
- Example: $1,200 card appears before $50 card
7. Lowest Price
- Sorts by current market price (least expensive first)
- Use for: Finding affordable cards with positive sentiment
- Example: $5 card with +60 sentiment appears first (potential hidden gem)

How to Use Mentions
1. Validate Sentiment Scores: Read actual mentions to understand why a card has a certain score
2. Gauge Quality: High-upvote mentions from experienced collectors carry more weight
3. Identify Themes: Look for common themes (undervalued, nostalgia, tournament play, artwork)
4. Check Sources: Multiple mentions from different users = stronger signal than one user posting repeatedly
5. Read Context: Click through to Reddit to see full discussion threads
Example: Reading a Mention
Card: Umbreon VMAX (Evolving Skies)
Mention:
Matched Text:
"Umbreon VMAX alt art is my #1 modern chase card. The artwork is
stunning and with Eeveelutions always being popular, I think this
card will age really well. Already up 30% this year."
Sentiment: Positive (+85)
Reasoning:
"User expresses strong personal preference (#1 chase card),
praises artwork (stunning), and provides investment thesis
(popular Pokemon + price performance), indicating very bullish
sentiment."
Posted by: u/PokemonInvestor2023
Score: 47 upvotes
Posted: 3 days ago
Analysis:
- High sentiment score (+85) backed by concrete reasoning
- High upvote count (47) shows community agreement
- Multiple bullish factors: aesthetics, popularity, price performance
- This is a quality mention that validates the sentiment score

Strategies for Using Sentiment Data
Strategy 1: Spot Early Hype
Goal: Identify cards gaining positive momentum before prices spike
Method:
1. Set Date Range to 7 days (catch recent hype)
2. Set Sentiment Direction to Bullish
3. Set Min Mentions to 10 (filter noise)
4. Sort By Trending Up (biggest sentiment increases)
5. Focus on cards with sentiment +40 or higher AND trend +15 or higher
What to Look For:
- Cards with sudden spikes in positive mentions
- Mentions referencing "undervalued" or "sleeper card"
- Multiple users independently expressing interest
Example:
Card: Garchomp C LV.X (Supreme Victors)
Sentiment: +68 (Bullish)
Trend: +42 (up from +26 last week)
Mentions: 23 (18 positive, 2 negative, 3 neutral)
Price: $45.00
Insight: Card seeing renewed interest from competitive players
and nostalgia collectors. Consider buying before prices increase.
Risk Management:
- Don't chase cards that already spiked in price
- Verify mentions discuss fundamentals, not just speculation
- Check if positive sentiment is backed by actual sales data
Strategy 2: Validate High-Dollar Purchases
Goal: Confirm expensive cards have sustained community support
Method:
1. Set Date Range to 90 days (long-term view)
2. Set Sentiment Direction to Bullish
3. Set Min Mentions to 50 (high discussion volume)
4. Sort By Highest Price
5. Look for cards with consistent positive sentiment across all time periods
What to Look For:
- Sentiment remains bullish across 7d, 30d, and 90d periods
- Mention counts stay high (not declining)
- Trend is stable or increasing (not declining)
Example:
Card: Charizard (Base Set 1st Edition)
Sentiment: +72 (90d), +75 (30d), +78 (7d)
Mentions: 234 (90d), 89 (30d), 31 (7d)
Trend: +3 (stable, slight increase)
Price: $2,800.00
Insight: Blue chip card with sustained community support.
Safe long-term hold or purchase.
Red Flags:
- Sentiment declining over time (90d > 30d > 7d)
- Mention counts dropping significantly
- Negative trend despite bullish score (hype may be fading)
Strategy 3: Detect Bearish Signals
Goal: Identify overpriced or overhyped cards before corrections
Method:
1. Set Date Range to 14 days
2. Set Sentiment Direction to All
3. Set Min Mentions to 20
4. Sort By Trending Down
5. Focus on cards with negative trends of -20 or worse
What to Look For:
- Cards that were bullish but are now neutral or bearish
- Mentions discussing "overhyped", "overpriced", or "bubble"
- Declining mention counts (interest fading)
Example:
Card: Pikachu VMAX (Vivid Voltage)
Sentiment: +15 (down from +58 last month)
Trend: -43 (significant decline)
Mentions: 18 (down from 67 last month)
Price: $180.00
Insight: Card was hyped but sentiment cooling rapidly.
Consider selling if you own, avoid buying.
Action Items:
- If you own the card: Consider selling before further decline
- If considering buying: Wait for sentiment to stabilize
- Monitor for continued decline or potential reversal
Strategy 4: Find Contrarian Plays
Goal: Identify cards with negative sentiment that may be oversold
Method:
1. Set Date Range to 30 days
2. Set Sentiment Direction to Bearish
3. Set Min Mentions to 15
4. Sort By Lowest Sentiment
5. Look for cards where sentiment doesn't match fundamentals
What to Look For:
- Cards with bearish sentiment but strong fundamentals (low pop, iconic artwork, historic significance)
- Negative mentions based on short-term factors (temporary supply glut, meta shifts)
- Signs sentiment may be bottoming out (trend becoming less negative)
Example:
Card: Mewtwo EX (Next Destinies)
Sentiment: -35 (Bearish)
Mentions: 22 (8 positive, 14 negative)
Price: $28.00 (down from $45 six months ago)
Recent Mentions:
- "Nobody plays this anymore" (competitive meta shifted)
- "Too many reprints"
- But: Historic competitive card, iconic Pokemon
Insight: Short-term bearishness may have overcorrected.
Contrarian opportunity if you believe in long-term value.
Risks:
- Sentiment can stay negative longer than expected
- Bearishness may be justified (card actually overpriced)
- Requires strong conviction and patience
Strategy 5: Monitor Your Portfolio
Goal: Track sentiment for cards you already own
Method:
1. Set Date Range to 14 days
2. Use Search to find your specific cards
3. Set Min Mentions to 5
4. Check sentiment and trend weekly
What to Look For:
- Sudden changes in sentiment (up or down)
- Declining mention counts (losing interest)
- Emerging negative themes in mentions
Example Portfolio Monitoring:
Card: Umbreon VMAX Alt Art
Previous: +62 sentiment, 45 mentions
Current: +58 sentiment, 48 mentions
Trend: -4 (slight decline)
Action: Monitor, no immediate concern
Card: Charizard VSTAR Rainbow
Previous: +41 sentiment, 28 mentions
Current: +12 sentiment, 15 mentions
Trend: -29 (significant decline)
Action: ⚠️ Review Reddit mentions, consider selling
Card: Lugia V Alt Art (Silver Tempest)
Previous: +35 sentiment, 22 mentions
Current: +67 sentiment, 54 mentions
Trend: +32 (significant increase)
Action: ✅ Hold or consider adding to position
Monitoring Frequency:
- Weekly: For active traders
- Bi-weekly: For casual investors
- Monthly: For long-term holders
Strategy 6: Combine with Price Data
Goal: Find divergences between sentiment and price action
Method:
1. Use sentiment data to identify candidates
2. Cross-reference with price charts and sales volume
3. Look for divergences (sentiment up, price flat = opportunity)
Example Divergences:
Bullish Divergence (Buy Signal):
Card: Espeon VMAX Alt Art
Sentiment: +65 and trending up (+18)
Price: $140 (flat for 3 months)
Insight: Positive sentiment not yet reflected in price.
Potential buying opportunity.
Bearish Divergence (Sell Signal):
Card: Mew VMAX Alt Art
Sentiment: -28 and trending down (-35)
Price: $95 (relatively stable)
Insight: Price hasn't reflected negative sentiment yet.
Consider selling before correction.
Confirmation (Hold):
Card: Charizard VSTAR (Brilliant Stars)
Sentiment: +52 and stable
Price: Rising steadily over 3 months
Insight: Sentiment and price aligned. Continue holding.
Common Questions
How accurate is sentiment analysis?
Sentiment analysis is a signal, not a guarantee. Here's what affects accuracy:
High Accuracy Scenarios:
- 50+ mentions (statistically significant sample size)
- Consistent sentiment across multiple users
- 14-30 day time periods (filters short-term noise)
- Clear, unambiguous language in mentions
Lower Accuracy Scenarios:
- <10 mentions (small sample size)
- 7-day period (can be volatile and noisy)
- Sarcasm, memes, or ambiguous language
- Coordinated pumping (multiple users artificially hyping)
Best Practice: Use sentiment as one factor among many (price trends, sales volume, historical data, grading population).
Why doesn't my favorite card have sentiment data?
Possible reasons:
1. Low Popularity: Card hasn't been discussed on Reddit recently
2. Niche Card: Lesser-known cards from unpopular sets get fewer mentions
3. Older Data: Older cards may have seasonal discussion (anniversary, nostalgia waves)
4. Alternative Names: Card might be mentioned by nickname (e.g., "Shiny Zard" instead of "Charizard VMAX Shiny")
Solution: Try longer time periods (90 days) or search for the card directly to see if it appears.
Can I trust low-mention cards?
Caution advised. A card with 2-3 mentions can easily have skewed sentiment:
Example:
- 2 mentions, both positive (+80 each) = +80 overall sentiment
- But this represents only 2 people's opinions
Guideline:
- 10+ mentions: Minimum for considering the data
- 25+ mentions: Good confidence level
- 50+ mentions: High confidence, statistically significant
Use the "Min Mentions" filter to avoid unreliable data.
How often is sentiment data updated?
- Scraping: Every 4-6 hours
- Aggregation: Every 6 hours
- Last Calculated: Shown on each card's detail view
Sentiment data is typically 1-6 hours behind real-time Reddit activity.
What if I see unusual or suspicious sentiment?
Some scenarios to watch for:
Coordinated Pumping:
- Sudden spike in positive mentions from brand-new Reddit accounts
- Repetitive language across multiple mentions
- Mentions focused on "will moon" or "to the moon" without substance
Sarcasm Misclassification:
- AI may miss sarcastic comments like "Oh yeah, this card is totally worth $500 🙄"
- Check actual mentions if sentiment seems off
Meme Activity:
- Cards featured in memes may show inflated mention counts
- Sentiment may not reflect genuine investment interest
Solution: Always read actual Reddit mentions before making decisions based on sentiment alone.
Can I use sentiment for sealed product?
Yes, sentiment focuses on cards, sealed products, and sets in general.
Does sentiment predict price changes?
Sentiment is a leading indicator, but not a perfect predictor:
When Sentiment Predicts Price:
- Strong sustained sentiment (50+ mentions, 30+ days)
- Sentiment backed by fundamentals (low population, iconic artwork)
- Sentiment aligned with sales volume increases
When Sentiment Doesn't Predict Price:
- Short-term noise or meme activity
- Sentiment without buying action (people talk but don't buy)
- External factors (reprints, bannings, market crashes) override sentiment
Best Use: Combine sentiment with price trends, sales volume, and supply/demand fundamentals.
Can I filter by specific sets?
Currently, the Sentiment tool doesn't have a set filter. However, you can:
1. Use the Search feature to find cards from specific sets
2. Search by set name (e.g., "Evolving Skies")
3. The search will show cards from that set with sentiment data
Workaround for Set Analysis:
- Sort by "Most Mentions" and note which sets appear frequently
- Manually track sentiment for key cards in sets you care about
What if sentiment conflicts with my research?
Trust your research first. Sentiment is one data point among many:
Example Conflict:
Card: Umbreon Gold Star (POP Series 5)
Your Research: Rare card, low population, iconic Pokemon
Sentiment: +15 (Neutral), 8 mentions
Conflict: Low mention count and neutral sentiment, but
card has strong fundamentals.
Resolution: Sentiment may not capture true value for
rare, older cards with less discussion. Trust fundamentals.
Rule of Thumb:
- For modern, actively-traded cards: Sentiment is more relevant
- For vintage, rare, or niche cards: Fundamentals matter more than sentiment
Troubleshooting
No cards showing when I apply filters
Possible causes:
1. Filters too restrictive: Lower your Min Mentions threshold
2. Date range too narrow: Try 30d or 90d instead of 7d
3. No data for selected criteria: Try removing sentiment direction filter
Solution: Start with broad filters (All sentiment, 7d, no min mentions) and narrow down progressively.
Sentiment scores seem off
Reasons:
1. Sarcasm: AI may misclassify sarcastic comments
2. Small sample: <10 mentions can skew results
3. Memes: Meme activity can create unusual sentiment
4. Context loss: AI analyzes excerpts, may miss surrounding context
Solution: Always read actual Reddit mentions to verify sentiment makes sense.
Card search returns no results
Troubleshooting:
1. Check spelling: "Charizard" not "Charizar"
2. Try partial names: "Zard" instead of "Charizard"
3. Remove special characters: "Tapu Koko" not "Tapu Koko-GX"
4. Try set name: "Base Set Charizard"
Note: Search uses autocomplete - start typing and select from suggestions.
Trend shows 0.0 for all cards
Causes:
1. Insufficient historical data: Card needs mentions in both current and previous periods
2. New cards: Recently released cards may not have comparison data yet
3. Time period selection: 7d trends require data from the previous 7 days as well
Solution: Try longer time periods (30d, 90d) which are more likely to have historical comparison data.
Mentions panel won't load
Troubleshooting:
1. Click the 💬 button - don't click the card name (that goes to card detail page)
2. Check for "No data" - cards with no mentions can't display the panel
3. Refresh the page if panel seems stuck
4. Check internet connection - panel loads data asynchronously
Reddit links are broken
Possible reasons:
1. Post was deleted: Original Reddit post may have been removed
2. Subreddit went private: Some subreddits occasionally go private
3. Account suspended: Post author's account may have been suspended
Note: We store mention text even if the original post is deleted, so you can still read what was said.
Sentiment doesn't match current prices
This is normal. Sentiment is a leading indicator, not a real-time price tracker:
- Lag time: Sentiment changes may take weeks to reflect in prices
- External factors: Market conditions, supply/demand, and other factors influence price
- Speculation vs. action: People may be bullish but not actively buying
Don't expect 1:1 correlation between sentiment and price. Use sentiment as one factor in your decision-making.
Glossary
Sentiment Score: A numerical value from -100 (very bearish) to +100 (very bullish) representing community opinion about a card.
Mention: A single reference to a Pokemon card in a Reddit post or comment.
Trend: The change in sentiment score compared to the previous equivalent time period (e.g., current 7d vs. previous 7d).
Bullish: Positive sentiment indicating community expectation of price increases or strong desirability.
Bearish: Negative sentiment indicating community concerns about price decreases or diminishing desirability.
Neutral: Sentiment score between -20 and +20, indicating mixed or balanced opinions.
Mention Breakdown: The count of positive, negative, and neutral mentions for a card (e.g., "24 / 8" = 24 positive, 8 negative).
Time Period: The duration over which sentiment is calculated (7 days, 14 days, 30 days, or 90 days).
Aggregate: Combined sentiment data from multiple mentions, averaged to create an overall score.
Leading Indicator: A metric that predicts future price movements rather than reflecting current prices.
Pump: Coordinated effort to artificially inflate sentiment or hype around a card (often by new accounts or repeated posts).
Alt Art: Alternative artwork version of a Pokemon card, often highly sought after by collectors.
Chase Card: A highly desirable card from a set that drives demand for sealed product and singles.
Pop Report / Population: The number of graded copies of a specific card at each grade level (e.g., "PSA 10 pop of 50").
NLP (Natural Language Processing): AI technology used to analyze text and determine sentiment from Reddit mentions.
Divergence: When sentiment and price trends move in opposite directions, potentially indicating a buying or selling opportunity.
Final Tips
1. Start Broad, Then Narrow: Begin with default filters, then refine based on what you're looking for
2. Read the Mentions: Don't rely solely on scores - read what people are actually saying

8. Check Multiple Time Periods: Compare 7d, 30d, and 90d to distinguish hype from sustained interest
9. Context Matters: High-dollar vintage cards may have low mentions but strong fundamentals
10. Use for Ideas, Not Decisions: Sentiment is a tool for generating ideas, not a replacement for due diligence
